Hurricane season: 10 tips to help you prepare

Water damage in Houston

ABC Restoration is ready to help before, during, and after the storm.

  1. INSPECT YOUR ROOF THOROUGHLY

A hurricane can turn a minor roof problem into a major emergency. Before storm season begins, schedule a professional roof inspection to look for missing shingles, weak flashing, and soft spots. A strong roof is your first line of defense against wind and water. Don’t wait until it starts leaking to act.

2. Clean Out Gutters and Downspouts

When gutters are clogged with leaves or debris, they can’t direct water away from your home, leading to leaks, foundation problems, and even flooding. Make it a habit to clean your gutters and ensure all downspouts extend at least 3 feet away from the foundation.

3. Trim Trees and Remove Dead Branches

Strong winds can snap branches, uproot trees, and send debris flying into your roof, siding, or windows. Trim back overgrown limbs, especially those near the house, fence, or power lines. Call a licensed arborist if you're unsure what's safe to remove.

4. Secure or Store Outdoor Items

Loose items like patio furniture, grills, planters, and even garden tools can become projectiles in high winds, damaging your property or a neighbor’s. Store everything that could be picked up by the wind.

5. Review Your Insurance Coverage

Not all policies automatically cover hurricane or flood damage. Review your policy carefully to ensure you’re covered for wind, water, and debris damage. Know your deductible and keep your policy number handy in case you need to file a claim quickly.

6. Back Up and Protect Important Documents

Make digital and physical copies of your most important paperwork, insurance documents, IDs, property deeds, contracts, and emergency contacts. Store them in a fireproof, waterproof container, and upload digital copies to a secure cloud folder or USB drive.

7. Install Storm Shutters or Board Up Windows

Windows are vulnerable entry points for wind and water. If your home or office doesn’t have storm shutters, consider installing them. Plywood boards can be a good temporary solution, but they must be cut and secured before a storm is on its way.

8. Reinforce Garage Doors and Entry Points

Garage doors are often overlooked, but they’re one of the most common failure points in a storm. If yours isn’t impact-rated, reinforce it with a bracing kit. Seal all entry doors tightly and make sure they have strong deadbolts or weather-resistant hardware.

9. Build or Refresh Your Emergency Supply Kit

If you lose power or can’t leave your home, a good emergency kit makes all the difference. Stock up on:

  • Water (1 gallon per person per day)
  • Non-perishable food for 3+ days
  • Flashlights, batteries, and chargers
  • First aid supplies and medications
  • Personal hygiene items
  • Blankets and cash
  • Pet food and supplies

10. Know Who to Call for Damage and Restoration

Even with the best preparation, storms can leave behind damage. When they do, a quick response is critical. ABC Restoration is ready to help, whether it’s roof repairs, fence replacement, water damage restoration, or structural fixes.
